I’ve been watching Nat Geo Wild for about 2-3 hours a day watching various programs from super cute baby animals, to animal fight clubs and learned a stack of things.
Some random facts that still blow my mind, is that there are animals that can alter their own gender (the spotted hyena and the cuttlefish), elephants can emit low and high-frequency sounds (low frequency is inaudible to the human ear), penguins mate for life and will fight with other penguins to protect their families, and some animals FEEL empathy such as chickens, dogs, chimpanzees.
Predators swim, run or walk for days for their food, and in ridiculous conditions. Some animals can lower their metabolic rate to survive longer without food if necessary. Animals adapt to survive. Some of these animals, very high up on the food chain.
Which leads me to think, that the argument that humans are on top of the food chain, may require a little more evidence.
Humans, while they can often hunt for their own food. They do not take it as it comes and procedures are required to make it “edible” or “delectable”, such as skinning, boiling, roasting. We would not eat raw, unseasoned meat. We would not eat our meat with fur/scales/ feathers on because that would be stupid. But we’re on top of the food chain right?
